30th USA Sangam Annual COnvention
Seattle Sangam had the distinct honor of hosting the 30th USA Sangam Annual Convention during Memorial Day weekend, from May 23 to May 25, 2025. This momentous event, co-sponsored by the City of Renton, was a vibrant and meaningful gathering of the Fiji South Indian community across the United States. Families, youth, elders, and friends from all walks of life reunited to celebrate our rich cultural roots, renew old friendships, and forge new connections.
This year's convention was more than just a gathering-it was a tribute to the enduring spirit and tireless efforts of those who built the foundation of our Sangam fraternity. Our founders, past presidents, committee leaders, volunteers, and supporters have worked diligently over the decades to strengthen the bonds of community, uphold our traditions, and ensure a space where Fiji South Indians in the diaspora can celebrate and thrive. Their contributions were visible in every detail of the convention, and their legacies honored at every step of the weekend.
The convention not only provided a space for cultural festivities but also functioned as a living testament to the values that define our community: family, education, unity, and resilience. For many, the annual convention is a pilgrimage-an opportunity to return to one's cultural roots, to be reminded of the values passed down through generations, and to pass that legacy forward. For the younger generation born and raised in the U.S., it was a living classroom of language, dance, music, history, and identity. The energy that enveloped the entire weekend was one of pride, learning, and belonging.
Day 1 - Friday, May 23: Golf Tournament & Fellowship
The weekend kicked off in high spirits with a friendly and competitive golf tournament at Riverbend Golf Complex in Kent, Washington. Participants from across the country teed off under bright skies, enjoying a day filled with laughter, light-hearted rivalry, and social camaraderie. This opening event set a welcoming tone for the days ahead and allowed visiting teams and local members to engage in relaxed conversations, building momentum for the convention's main activities.
This year, there were two divisions: Open and Sangam. It was also the first time females participated in the golf tournament. A young participant, Kris Pillay from Seattle, won the overall Sangam trophy.
Golf has become a staple opening tradition at Sangam conventions, offering a platform for intergenerational dialogue and connection beyond the confines of formal convention sessions. Newcomers were welcomed, friendships rekindled, and the excitement for the cultural and sports events grew among participants. Golf was more than a sport on this day-it was a medium of connection. Fathers played alongside sons, old rivals shared friendly banter, and new faces were welcomed with warm handshakes and encouragement. The natural greens of Riverbend provided an ideal backdrop to open conversations about Sangam's journey and future. Participants left the course not only with scorecards but also with renewed enthusiasm for the
convention.
Day 2 - Saturday, May 24: AGM, Parade & Cultural Showcase
The second day began with the USA Sangam Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Renton High School's cafeteria. From 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, delegates, leaders, and board members from various chapters convened to discuss important organizational matters. Reports were shared, resolutions passed, and plans for future growth laid out. The AGM served as a vital governance pillar, reinforcing Sangam's commitment to transparency, accountability, and sustainability.
The AGM elected TIV officials to lead the USA Sangam's youth wing, while TISI held an unopposed election for its 2025 Board members for a two-year term.
After a productive morning, attention shifted to the Official Opening Ceremony held at 16400 SE Petrovitsky Rd. A grand parade unfolded as chapter teams, dressed in coordinated uniforms, marched with pride, bearing state and cultural banners. Spectators cheered as the youth and elder members alike represented their cities and regional chapters, displaying enthusiasm and unity.
H.E. Ratu Illisoni Vuidreketi, the Ambassador of Fiji to the United States, officiated at the official opening. The Fijian Embassy offered passport services to the Fijian community at the Convention. It was an excellent opportunity for the people of Fiji to utilize the services provided by the Fijian Embassy.
This visual showcase of diversity and unity within the Fiji South Indian community exemplified the core values of Sangam-solidarity, cultural preservation, and community pride.
The parade was a particular highlight. Children marched alongside adults, some waving the Fiji flag while others showcased handmade posters celebrating South Indian icons, temples, and traditional attire. From sarees to veshtis, every participant was adorned with pride and purpose. The parade culminated with a welcome address from Seattle leaders, followed by short blessings from religious representatives of Hindu, Christian, and Muslim faiths-symbolizing unity in diversity.
Saturday, May 24: AGM, Cultural Night Program
The evening of Saturday was transformed into a vibrant Cultural Night presented by Then India Mathaar Sangam (TIMS). The program opened with a traditional prayer and lamp-lighting ceremony, honoring ancestral blessings and spiritual unity. Alice Fong, CEO of the Center for Ethical Leadership, officiated the opening ceremony of the cultural program. Additionally, former Fiji TIV President Mr. Ganga Raju provided a brief overview of religion and culture during the cultural night program. A well-curated sequence of performances followed, featuring Kuchipudi dances by youth performers, Tamil Kirtans by adults and children, and even a narration segment highlighting the traditional attire of South Indian heritage.
Seattle and Sacramento teams delivered moving musical performances, and the night ended with a Terekutthu (folk dance) presented by the Hayward group. Audiences were deeply engaged, responding with resounding applause and appreciation. The TIMS group received widespread praise for curating a well-balanced program that was both entertaining and rooted in cultural authenticity.
A communal dinner followed, where attendees enjoyed homemade meals, chatted about the performances, and shared stories. The sense of belonging and joy was palpable as the cultural showcase reinforced the importance of preserving heritage through performing arts.
Parents, grandparents, and community elders filled the auditorium with tears of joy as they watched their grandchildren perform songs and dances they once practiced in Fiji. The emcees-gracefully fluent in both English and Tamil-guided the program with humor and cultural reverence. Cultural night was not merely entertainment; it was a demonstration of Sangam's success in cultivating pride in tradition among its youth. The hall, adorned in gold, red, and floral arrangements, resembled a festive temple courtyard.
Day 3 - Sunday, May 25: Finals & Athletic Pride
The final day of the convention was all about athleticism, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit. Starting at 8:30 am, teams from across the USA competed in soccer (open and masters divisions), volleyball, and netball. Each match brought electrifying moments and drew loud cheers from the sidelines. Players displayed commendable discipline, teamwork, and skill, while the crowd lent their energy to uplift their respective teams.
Stockton Sangam won the 2025 open division soccer tournament, defeating the defending champions, Sangam of East Bay. In the Masters division, Sangam of East Bay claimed the Masters Division Trophy after playing against Seattle, which finished as
the runner-up.
Seattle Mathaar Sangam Netball and Volleyball teams achieved a decisive win in the finals, securing the title of Overall Convention Champions. The city's performance in sports, cultural programming, and organizational leadership throughout the weekend set a benchmark for future hosts. Sacramento secured the men's volleyball trophy by defeating Seattle Sangam. The sports events not only entertained but strengthened inter-city bonds and gave youth members a platform to lead with excellence and commitment.
In the Masters division, seasoned players showcased grace and experience, earning standing ovations for their coordination and strategy. Young athletes were cheered on by peers, parents, and even rival teams, reflecting the deep-rooted camaraderie nurtured by Sangam's inclusive philosophy. Volunteers ensured water, refreshments, and medical aid were always available, making sure athletes remained safe and supported. The day ended with joyful celebrations, drumbeats, and impromptu team chants that echoed into the evening.
Awards Night - A Grand Finale
The convention culminated in a heartwarming Awards Night at St. Bernadette Parish in Seattle. Members arrived in colorful traditional attire, carrying the joy and pride of a weekend well spent. Trophies and recognitions were presented to outstanding performers in sports, cultural activities, and community service.
Group photos captured the magic of the night-smiling faces, proud parents, joyful children, and honored guests. The evening reflected the Sangam spirit in its full glory: unity, recognition, and the promise of continued cultural resilience.
Each chapter returned with memories etched in gold and new ideas for their own local events. It was more than an ending-it was a new beginning for all who participated.
Beyond trophies and titles, the night was also an opportunity to recognize selfless service. Several volunteers, cultural coordinators, and behind-the-scenes organizers were called up for special acknowledgments. Youth leadership awards were introduced this year, honoring young men and women who had taken initiative in organizing and mentoring. It was a proud moment for families to see their children shine not just in competition, but in character and leadership.
